Accomplishment of the Muslim community at UCLA

Muslims at UCLA have a demonstrated history of service that reaches beyond the boundaries of UCLA’s campus. Muslims on campus have been instrumental in the development of many projects that have received recognition from the University, the City of Los Angeles, and even the United States Congress for their contributions to society.

Student Groups
Muslim Student Association (MSA) at UCLA represents the UCLA Muslim study body on campus and serves as a resource for the greater UCLA community on Islam and Muslims. Committed to Islamic principles of social justice and community service, the MSA is responsible for many service projects (described below) on campus. In addition to these projects, the MSA is responsible each year for organizing various campus activities to educate the UCLA community about Islam. MSA activities include: Palestinian Awareness Week, College Day, MSA banquets, brothers and sisters halaqas, and jummah prayer as well as the five daily prayers on campus.

Muslim Graduate Student Group (MGSG) at UCLA connects Muslim graduate students from various academic and professional backgrounds at UCLA. The group aims to inspire and promote constructive and intellectually rigorous dialogue within the broader Muslim community, foster community and individual growth, and provide venues for professional growth.

Muslim Law Students Association (MLSA) at UCLA provides a resource to UCLA students and faculty on Islam and Muslims in order to educate and promote tolerance and understanding on campus and within the greater community. The group provides a strong student network that provides academic support, an alumni network, and finally assistance to pre-law students in their pursuit of law school.

Projects
Al-Talib, the largest Muslim student publication in the nation, distributes to over 120 mosques, community centers and Muslim businesses in over 40 states and has over 1200 active subscribers. Now in its 20th year of production, this UCLA Muslim newsmagazine has been instrumental in educating the UCLA community and its subscription base about political and cultural issues that affect the Muslim community.

Journal of Islamic and Near Eastern Law (JINEL) is published twice a year at UCLA.  As the first law school journal in the West dealing with Islamic and Near Eastern Law,  JINEL strives to emphasize and critically analyze legal issues--social, political, civil, historical, economic, and commercial--that are of particular relevance to Muslims and Near Easterners in both Muslim and non-Muslim societies.

UMMA Free Clinic was established in South Los Angeles by Muslims at UCLA in 1996 to provide free medical care to the needy, regardless of faith. Today, the UMMA Clinic serves a patient population of over 15,000. This pioneering social service project has garnered much acclaim, receiving the Charles E. Young Humanitarian Award three times. The UMMA Clinic has been featured extensively in local and national media, including the United States Congress.

Incarcerated Youth Tutorial Project (IYTP) began as a Muslim student response to the high rate of criminal recidivism in America. Now in its 20th year, IYTP strives to help inmates complete their GED while providing mentoring services for incarcerated youth by UCLA students.

Mentors for Academic and Peer Support (MAPS) empowers high school students through mentor relationships with UCLA students to gain access to institutions of higher learning like UCLA. MAPS provides students with the tools they need to succeed as they pursue higher education.

Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) connects freshmen and transfers students at UCLA with experienced UCLA students. Through AMP, students develop valuable mentoring and personal relationships, fostering our growing UCLA Bruin community.

Academic Groups and Programs:
A variety of academic programs and centers dedicated to the Islamic World flourish on campus, making UCLA’s academic community devoted to issues of Islam and Muslims one of the most vibrant and active in the nation. Programs include the Islamic Studies and Middle Eastern and North African Studies programs and the Center for Near Eastern Studies, which includes the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (NELC) at UCLA.

Quran

And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."
